PROJECT
We were instructed by Coogan and Co Architects to support a full application for two drive thru restaurants in Chippenham, Wiltshire. The development site provided a challenging location, surrounded by a highway network undergoing significant improvements and without an existing access.

APPROACH
We were required to undertake in-depth modelling of the impact that development trip attraction would have on the local highway network. Despite the need for drive thru restaurants to be accessed by car, we were able to agree with Wiltshire Council that a significant proportion of the forecast trips would comprise linked, diverted and pass-by trips that were already on the network.

Significant liaison was held with highways officers to agree the site access arrangements, given land constraints and the proximity to a major roundabout junction. We also provided input into the car park design to ensure efficient circulation of vehicles accessing the drive thru restaurants.

OUTCOME
The application received planning permission in 2018. We were subsequently instructed to undertake detailed design drawings as part of the Section 278 application, which was agreed with Wiltshire Council in 2019. To discharge conditions, we are liaising with the appointed contractors and Wiltshire Council’s Street Works team to prepare a detailed Construction Traffic Management Plan (CTMP). The CTMP will include a phased construction schedule, construction vehicle trip attraction information, temporary traffic management requirements and a suite of measures to mitigate the effects of construction activities.
