From Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th June, the 2022 Big Bang Fair will be held. No less than one of the key STEM events of the year, the celebration will take place at The NEC in Birmingham – and the government company responsible for the operation, maintenance and improvement of England’s motorways and major A roads will be there.

That company is National Highways, which has said it will be present at the fair to give 11 to 14 year olds a taste of what it is like to take on the monumental task of managing the country’s strategic road network.

What will students be able to experience at National Highways’ stand?

The organisation formerly known as the Highways Agency – and subsequently Highways England – has said that its stand will give young visitors the chance to “discover all the fantastic ways that we’re bringing new digital technology into our day-to-day work.”

The company said that the youngsters would be able to try its concrete scanners, in addition to finding out more about its low-carbon mission. The students will also be able to challenge themselves to the task of building a low-cost bridge.

A key focus of The Big Bang Fair is not only inspiring the students who be the future of the UK’s world-leading STEM industries, but also equipping them with the knowledge that they will need in order to make the most informed choices. Sure enough, National Highways will also be providing career advice to those enquiring at its stand.

What is the Big Bang Fair?

Founded in 2009, the Big Bang Fair has grown to become one of the UK’s key showcases of STEM to young people. It takes place every year in June, and is geared towards bringing scientific and engineering topics to life for its student attendees.

The event is open to schools, and consists of interactive activities designed to fire the imaginations of 11 to 14 year olds, who are also able to meet with real scientists and engineers.
